Thankful Thursday

You know if I ever write a book its going to have to be in a quiet place with no noise.  We are watching Cougar Town and its very distracting trying to write a post!  Ok so I probably wont be writing a book...ever...but its good to know :)

What have you guys been doing this week?  I havent been getting great sleep this week so my creative juices arent flowing like normal.  What has everyone been working on this week I would love to hear from you!!

Today Im thankful for holiday weekends!  I have changed jobs twice this year so I dont have any vacation time stored up...no time off for me unless its a paid holiday.  So a 3 day weekend is just what the doctor ordered.  I have great plans for this weekend and one is getting a new haircut/color and get my nails done.  As long as it looks good Ill share with you when I get a picture :)  I have another fun plan for Monday but I think Im going to make a post out of it so Ill hold of on sharing that with you until later.  Do you have any fun plans for this Memorial Day weekend?  Hopefully my dad will be barbequing this weekend, I love a good barbeque, especially when its not me who is hosting!  Hmmm what dessert should I make :)  So Im thankful for an extended weekend where I have fun plans that dont involve me cleaning the house in preparation for people coming over (2weeks in a row is too much).

My beautiful Oreo, doing what I wish I was doing all day today...napping.  Such a good dog, at night he comes and sits by me and sleeps on me.  Some people dont like it but its relaxing having my puppy dog sleeping by me :)

Foodie Friday #20

Happy Good Friday/Passover everyone!  Im sure you have all seen the million and one Easter food posts around the blog-osphere and on Pinterest.  Well I dont really have one for you today mainly because my mom is doing Easter this year so I didnt have to think about what to cook this year.  The recipe I am sharing with you today I did make this past Christmas and they tasted awesome...but make sure you read the note at the bottom of the recipe for notes on yeast and bread rising.  

These rolls are great for any occasion, although I really dont like to make homemade bread unless family is coming over...its a lot of work for everyday cooking, for me at least.  So without further ado, I present to you Cinnamon-Glazed Butterhorns!!

Cinnamon-Glazed Butterhorns

(A Taste of Home recipe)

Servings: 24       Prep Time: 35min     Rise Time: 1hr   Cook Time: 15min     Difficulty: Moderate

Ingredients

·         1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast (not instant)

·         ¼ cup warm water (110° to 115°)

·         1 cup warm milk (110° to 115°)

·         ½ cup butter, melted

·         ¼ cup sugar

·         1 egg

·         ¾ teaspoon salt

·         4 to 4-1/4 cups all-purpose flour

Glaze:

·         3 tablespoons butter

·         1 cup confectioners’ sugar

·         ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon

·         1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

·         1 to 2 tablespoons hot water

Instructions

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the milk, butter, sugar, egg, salt and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.

Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide in half. Roll each portion into a 12-in. circle; cut each circle into 12 wedges. Roll up wedges from the wide end and place point side down 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Curve ends to form a crescent.

Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes. Bake at 350° for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks.

For glaze, heat butter in a small saucepan until golden brown; remove from the heat. In a bowl, whisk the confectioners’ sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and browned butter until smooth. Whisk in enough hot water to achieve spreading consistency. Brush over warm rolls.

**Notes** When I made this my dough didnt rise at all...I seem to have a hard time with that and its probably due to the quality of yeast I use, I hear great things about King Arthur yeast.  But as I said this dough didnt rise but I still cooked them anyway.  They didnt have the fluffy texture that crescent rolls normally have but the flavor was great.  Dont throw it out just because it doesnt rise, try to bake it and see what happens.  Also...sometimes the yeast doesnt rise because the water is either too hot or not hot enough.  If you are an expert with yeast then no worries but for beginners I recommend using a thermometer to get the right temp that should help with the rising issue as well.

1 roll equals 160 calories, 6 g fat (4 g saturated fat), 24 mg cholesterol, 118 mg sodium, 24 g carbohydrate, 1 g fiber, 3 g protein.

Thankful Thursday

Happy Thursday everyone!  Some of you may have Good Friday off and if you do...lucky ducks!  I will be here working but I am stewing on a great recipe for tomorrow.  Any suggestions on what kind of recipe you would like to see?

Today, in honor of the holiday we are about to celebrate, I want to say I am thankful for Jesus.  To be honest I really dont like when blogs drone on and on about religion.  That may offend some and Im sorry but the blogs I follow, I do so because they are creative in all ways but when all the posts become all about your religion and nothing to do with why I loved your blog in the first place I lose interest.  Well I dont want to lose your interest but I do feel it needs to be said that I am thankful for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  I have had some great opportunities come my way this year and I 100% believe that its because I am being more faithful in my walk and my giving to the Lord.

It seems to me the Easter has become more about candy and easter egg hunts than what the holiday is actually about.  The other day I was wondering why we even have the egg as a symbol for Easter.  For Christmas I know what the majority of the traditions are about (mainly because its my favorite holiday) but for Easter I was clueless, I couldnt see the connection...until I went to the History channel's website.  Apparently the egg used to be considered a meat and was forbidden as part of Lent.  As Lent comes to a close with Easter Sunday, thousands of years ago, people would decorate the eggs to celebrate the ability to eat them again.  Eggs also represent new life as an egg (when fertilized of course) brings a chick into the world.  Which can of course be tied to Easter Sunday as Jesus rose from the grave, with new life.  I get the connection and can get on board with that, so future possible children of mine, dont worry your Easter eggs are safe :)  If you want to read more about Easter traditions, here is the link to the History channel.  Im sure there are other places to find out about Easter, but the History channel's site seems more legit over Wikipedia.  Also, the Easter Bunny came along because they are pretty fertile and also bring new life, and hello they are adorable!

Aside from traditions that were made to fit a holiday that can stand alone as amazing, remember the reason for the season (as so many people say for Christmas) and that is Easter is about a time we celebrate Chris rising from the dead and bringing new life and hope to the masses.  There is nothing I could be more thankful for than knowing that I get to spend eternity in heaven (which by the way still terrifies me, even though its a happy thing).  I want to wish you all a Happy Easter, I hope you get to spend some quality time with your loved ones and remember why we actually celebrate Easter and not as just another day to buy cards and candy.

Merry Christmas to You

I know Im a day late, but cooking for my family takes a long time!  So today I am wishing you a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year.  I hope you had a fabulous holiday with your family and friends and that you will be blessed in 2012.  I always love Christmas, all the hard work and thought I put into the differnet gifts for people, finally seeing their faces when they open your gift and they are so excited about it, I love seeing that it makes my Christmas. 

What holiday traditions do you have that you love and make your day?  This year was the first year we had Christmas Day and my house and I cant wait to continue that tradition for years to come.  Of course I am the only one in the family that goes all out with the decorations but still, I love Christmas and I love hosting Christmas at my house.

I promise a house tour will come, but for right now here is our pretty christmas tree with our hodge podge or ornaments.

Christmas Ornaments

Its almost Christmas!!  Is everyone as excited as I am?!  In honor of it being Christmas I am going to share with you my favorite Christmas ornament decoration.  I have been doing this for years and love them.  Hopefully you will too!!  The top picture is one I made last year and here are a few others.

Now to tell you how to do it...its really easy but is a major waste of paint.  I love them though so I say its worth it.  As you can see from the white ornament though it does matter what kind of paint  you get, not all paint is created equal and you can tell from that pic for sure.  I buy Folk Art metallic pain and it seems to work the best

I use all colors, usually more red/green/white because those are classic Christmas colors, but I love using fun colors too like pink and blue.  I did black and pink once too so the possibilities are endless!  The supplies you need are:

• Glass ornaments
• acrylic paint assorted colors
• ribbon
• ornament tray (keep the packaging the ornaments come in you are going to need it)
• embelishments (optional)

First step is to take the top off of the ornaments, the top being the silver part where you hook the ornament to the tree.  Once you have the top off you can start pouring in your paint.  I do one color at a time but you can do whatever you want.  In the picture below you can kind of see an example of that.  I usually do 5 stripes of paint.  After you get the paint in, start swiriling it around.  The more stripes you have the easier I find it to be to get paint coverage. 

This is also why I said this is wasteful of paint, because after you have the ornament covered in the marble pattern you love, dump the ornament over and have all the paint drip out.  I use the plastic ornament try to do this, but I have seen people use plactic cups and that looks like a good idea too.  I usually let these sit like that overnight to let the paint dry and get all the excess paint out.  When you think yours are ready put the top back on, add your embelishments and top with a ribbon.  Pretty easy right!

Foodie Friday

YAY for Friday!!  Today is Foodie Friday and Im going to share with you one of the recipes I make for Christmas Cookies.  I love christmas cookies, making the dough, cutting them out, but I HATE decorating them.  I dont know why, I just hate decorating cookies, but se la vie we all have to do things in life we dont really like.  So lets get to the recipe shall we?!  Today is Eggnog Cutout Cookies.  I love these because the spice is subtle and the decorating is a snap!  I divide the icing recipe into 4 bowls and dye them different colors to make fun solid color cookies.  Here is the recipe:

Eggnog Cutout Cookies

(A Taste of Home recipe)

Servings: 4dozen         Prep Time: 25min           Chill: 1hr            Bake: 10min        Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup butter, softened
• 1 cup sugar
• 2 eggs
• 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon eggnog
• 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Icing

• 2 cups confectioners' sugar
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, optional
• 4 to 5 tablespoons eggnog (the better quality eggnog the better the icing, thick is good)
• Liquid or paste food coloring, optional

Instructions

• In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs. Stir in eggnog. Combine the flour, salt, baking soda and nutmeg; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or until easy to handle.
• On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with floured 2-1/2-in. cookie cutters. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets.
• Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes or until edges begin to brown. Remove to wire racks to cool.
• In a small bowl, beat the confectioners' sugar, nutmeg if desired and enough eggnog to achieve icing consistency. Add food coloring if desired. Spread over cooled cookies; let stand until set. 

A note from me...when you roll them out you need  ALOT of flour, they can be kinda sticky and the first batch will not un-stick from the surface, but once you get to the second, third, fourth batch they turn out great.  Just be prepared to use a lot of flour.

Holiday Spirit

Well we're back from our Disney Christmas vacation and missing the holiday spirit that only Disney can create.  For those of you who have never been to Walt Disney World during the holidays you are really missing out.  The main reason we got (other than the beautiful Castle decked in lights) is for the Osborne Family Spectale of Dancing Lights at Hollywood Studios.  These lights are truly spectacular!  The Imagineers at Hollywood Stuidos start putting these lights up in August and it is well worth all the blood, sweat and tears Im sure they put into it.  I would post a video of the show, but Im not sure I can because of the music they use and licensing and all that, but here is a link to the Wikepedia page for some info (I know Wikepedia sucks but its helpful when the family doesnt have their own website.) The Osborne family, well Jennings really always inspires me.  He was a simple man that just had the spirit of Christmas and a love for his daughter.  What started out as a simple request for Christmas lights on their house, turned into buying the houses on either side of their house to add more Christmas lights.  Eventually complains were made to the city and Jennings had to take them down, but fortunately for the world Disney stepped in and gave them permenant residence in Hollywood Studios.  What inspires me most about Jennings is that he was so giving, not only did he had the light show, but he also helped feed the hungry with annual barbeques and generous donations.  This man inspires me to be better and do better.  Maybe one day I will have so many lights my neighbors will have a ceist and decist order aginst me.  Maybe one day my display will go down in infamy and not just because of the display but because of all the good I did in life.  That day isnt here yet, but maybe one day  :)


Here is a picture of the lights, and this is just a taste, when the show is going you dont move because you cant, the lights mezmorize you can root you to the ground.  I stood and watched these lights for an hour and still felt like it wasnt enough.  Ok so I have an obsession with Christmas and Christmas lights, but can you blame me they are awesome!

This is just one shot of the street, but I think it gives a good idea of how cool the lights are.  And because I know you need to see it, here is the beautiful castle that I just cant get enough of.

Deck the Halls!

After I made my list, and it took a while to come up with all the cute sayings, I wanted to print them on cardstock and put them in the ornament pockets.  I thought I would find a premade template from avery.com since they have premade labels and such but I couldnt find anything cute so I set out to make my own.  In Microsoft Word (I am a PC, haha) I made a table that was 2inches x 4inches (which I now realize was a little too long so it should have been 2x3, but you can learn from my trial by error) and started plugging in my phrases.  After I had that all done, I went on google to try and find an awesome border, and I found a great holly one, which I share here now for you :)

I am still getting used to Windows 7 so it took a while to get the placement right on this clip art and to make it stay behind the text, but once I got the clip art set as the background for each block of the table I was ready to print.  I printed these on cardstock and then laminated them just to be sure nothing would happen to them and I would have them for years to come.  And here is what they look like now.

Not my finest photography moment, but you get the idea.  So now they are all in the slots of the christmas tree and ready for the first day of December!  I do want to add that when you put your activities make sure you pay attention to the date.  You dont want to put a weekend activity in a weekday slot, for example we have the visit a winter wonderland card, well thats not really something we want to do after we get off work because where we go is an hour and a half away, so that has to go in a saturday or sunday slot.  You get the picture, so happy creating!

Underneath the Miseltoe

You remember a while back I made some super easy Christmas Ornaments?  Well I had some left over christmas picks and decided to make my own "miseltoe".  I know it looks nothing like the real thing, but I thought it would be a nice decoration to add to all my others since I dont really have anything that serves as miseltoe in the house.

Super easy, just get your picks (I used 3) tape them all together and tie a bow around it!  So fast and easy and this ones is so fun I can put it just about anywhere!  Have fun making your super easy "miseltoe" and if you have some amazing pictures of one you have made share!!

Advent Calendars Abound

Yesterday was a day of learning for me.  I learned that I buy WAY to much fabric for projects.  I learned why people sew felt rather than iron it.  And I learned that Twilight is the perfect movie to cut mass amounts of fabric too (you really dont have to pay attention to it).  So let me start at the beginning and show you the inspiration for this craft project.  I saw this on pinterest and loved it, but when I saw how much work/sewing was involved I knew immediately I was going to have to modify this a bit.

Pretty right!  So I had the basic concept, now to get the supplies.  I knew right away that I was never going to sew all those ornaments and all that so I bought some very thin hem tape (which I late realized I could just use hot glue, talk about a ah-ha moment).  I also bought 1 yard of dark green felt, 1 1/2 yards dark red felt and 25 felt squares.  Did you guys know about felt squares?!  They are in the kids craft sections and are typically 4 for $1...money saving tip right there because I was going to get 1/2 yard of each color I wanted and that was going to be way more expensive.  I also bought a dowl rod to make the project sturdy and I had ribbon at home so I didnt need to get any of that. 

Now that I had my supplies I was ready to get started.  I got the patterns for the tree and ornaments from the about blog post, which I have saved in a better format for you, but arent on this computer so I will load those up later today.  Here is kind of what they look like though to give you an example.

 I decided to start cutting the ornaments since this was probably going take the longest time (I forgot I had to cut the numbers).

Those are all the colors I have for the ornaments, minus the brown that is for the trunk of the tree.  There are 3 glitter felt pages in there too because I love glitter and it helped break up the plain red/green/white ornaments.  Honestly it only took me an hour of slow cutting to get them all done, and I was cutting one by one because honestly I dont trust my multi-page cutting skills but for those of you more talented you can totally cut faster than 1 hour.  This is also when I realized I had bought WAY too much felt.  Each square will cut 4 ornaments easily with a little extra.  Since I only needed 25 ornaments I only actually used 7 felt squares for the ornaments.  I needed 1 additional square for the trunk and will need 1 more for the star but thats only 9 squares out of the 25 I bought, so FYI, you dont need nearly as much as I originally thought.

You can kind of see the glitter ones better here, there is a white glitter one but those never really came across in the pictures.  You can also see the trunk cut-out here as well.  Now that the ornaments were cut, I was ready to cut the tree.

This is my tree and backing felt.  This is also where I realized where the iron and felt dont really mix.  Just so you all know, felt smells really bad when you iron it and the hem tape takes longer to adhere to the felt.  You have to be really patient and also make sure you dont have any hem tape showing (sometimes I dont make it perfect and have some sticking out which will melt off) because with felt it doesnt melt off so be careful there.  You could use hot glue rather than hem tape, I didnt because I didnt think about it, and it also doesnt seem as strong.  Sewing is also an option but I dont own a sewing machine so that was totally out.  Anyway, moving on to cutting the tree.  I had a pattern that I dplicated 4 times, but really I should have done 5 it would have been better, but I made it work anyway.

This is what the tree looked like after I had used the hem tape to secure it to the backing (I cut the hem tape to fit each vertical part of the tree as well as the base and the triangle of the top, for the base I just cut 4 strips to fit the box and ironed it all down).  The hard part of cutting this tree was I wanted to make sure it was fat enough so I didnt use the middle fold to cut (which as we know makes cutting things easier) so I did each side individually.  I realized now that if i had the extra pattern (making the total points 6) and I make it so the bottom of the tree was further out than the top of the tree I could have folded the fabric in 1/2 and cut that way, but we live and learn so you know to do that when you make your creation.  On the excess fabric from the tree...I bought 1 yard because I wanted to make sure I had enough but remember that the felt is folded so if you are confident in your cutting abilities you could get away with 1/2 yard and use the fold tecnique to use less fabric and save money, and the same goes for the backing.  I bought 1 1/2yards but only used the front part so if you get 3/4 of a yard you will have plenty once you open the fold.  I did end up cutting off about 1/2inch from one side to make sure the dowl rod had room to stick out, and I left 2 inches at the top to make the fold for the dowl rod to fit it as shown below.  You can kind of see the fold and that is where you slip in the dowl rod to hang your beautiful calendar.

Now that you have your hem for the dowl rod, the tree hemmed to the backing and the trunk hemmed to the backing you are ready to place the ornaments.  This would also be a good time to cut the numbers.  My husband offered his help with this and I was so happy, I SUCK at cutting intricate things (yes I consider numbers intricate) so it took him about an hour to cut all those numbers and he did double up on cutting numbers at the same time.  The hardest part for him I think was getting all the holes out of the numbers (like the middle of the eight) that took some patience.  Once you have all your ornaments in place, add the numbers and you can get a glimpse of what your finished project will look like.

You can also see the star is here, I have that template in my sheets also which will come later.  Once I got all this in place I realized how much hem tape I was going to have to use and got very discourage...and thats when the lightning bolt came...HOT GLUE!!!!  I started by gluing each number to each ornament (so that when I glued the ornament the numbers wouldnt fall off silly people!) then glued the star to the top of the tree.  Another thank you goes out to my husband for reminding me that I shoudlnt glue the whole ornament down because then I would have no pocket for my amazing advent surprise.  Ok so get to gluing the ornaments, I flipped them over and started gluing the bottom half at the edges only, so an outline of glue around the bottom 1/2 of the ornament.  This whole process only took about 30minutes, gotta love hot glue.  Now that everything was attached to the tree and my pockets primmed and ready I could get to the almost final touch, the ribbon to hang the calendar from.  I didnt have enough room to tie a knot and I was afraid the knot would come undone so I hot glued the ribbon to the dowl rod on each side so it cant come off.  And viola!  A almost completed advent calendar!

I say almost because the most important part of this project is still under constructions.  I decided a while back (mainly becasue I found it on pinterest) that rather than doing candy or just numbers to put experiences in each date.  So for example on one day we will drink hot chocolate and watch harry potter, another day we will make a gingerbread house.  That is what the pockets are for, to put the experience cards in.  Right now all that is left of those cards is to print them off with a cool border and out them in the calendar.  Tomorrow I will post those, Im so excited to share them with you, and hopefully you can add some to your family traditions! 

Here is a recap of what you need for the advent calendar:

3/4yard backing felt
1 yard felt for tree (1/2 yard if you are a good cutter)
7 felt squares in the colors of your choice
1 brown felt square (for the trunk)
1 yellow felt square (for the angel)
1 dowl rod (width of your choice)
1 spool ribbon
1/4 yard black felt
hot glue gun/hem tape/sewing machich (pick your posion)
fabric scissors
patterns
tape (I used this to hold the pattern to the fabric while I cut so I wouldnt make a mistake)

These are sooo easy I cant stand it!  For years I have been making ornaments by marbling paint.  They look amazing but its so wasteful of paint and took so long to dry.  For the new ornaments all you need is a clear ornament, picks (those sticks of fun things in the holiday craft section), scrapbook paper, wallet size picture, tweezers.  Be careful when you decide on the picks you want, you have to make sure they will fit in the opening of your ornament.  Now comes the fun part...getting your pictures ready!  I forgot to do cool stuff to my pictures before I printed them, but you can always add the year or a phrase on the picture using a photo editing program.  I have picasa, but probably any program will work.  I printed 6 pictures on 5x7 photo paper and those sizes seemed to work well for me, but I dont know for sure how big they were, I just eye-balled it :) .  After you cut out the pictures tape them to your scrapbooking paper.  I did a red/white/green theme, but there are endless possibilities for you to do.  I didnt make the border around the picture too big because I was worried about it fitting in the ornament, but you can always play with it to find what works best for you.  I also used a glue stick at first but that didnt stick when I went to put them in the ornament so thats why I recommend using tape, that seemed to work well for me.  Before you put the picture in fill the ornament up with the pick you decided on.  It took almost a whole pick for each ornament, but that was very full so depending on how full you want the ornament will depend on how many picks you need.  Once you have your ornament full roll your picture up in a small tube and slide it into the ornaments.  Using the tweezers, unroll the picture and try and flatten it back out.  This was the hardest part of all this and does take some patience, but if you are using long thin tweezers you should be fine.  Once you get your picture in a good position, put the top back on your ornament and you are finished!!  I decided to not put a ribbon on my ornaments this year since the inside was already so colorful but you can always add ribbion if your heart desiers...mine usually does :)  Happy crafting, I hope yours turn out fantastic!
