Eggs Over Easy

This is what I have for you today...a pretty egg!  Yay!  And to top it off its super easy...BIG YAY!  Below is the final product to get you excited for the building process.  My mom made these when I was a kid and they were always my favorite ornament on the Christmas tree.  Well she finally showed me how to do them the other day and I was over the moon excited to try them out.  Like seriously excited!  I thought these were made from fabric and I was thinking they were going to be super hard but boy was I wrong!

What you will need for this project:

• 1 1/2 inch ribbon (a whole spool)
• styrafoam egg (any size you want, I used the larger egg)
• flat top stick pins (make sure they are point on the end and not straight)
• Decorative ribbon, any kind you want
• Scissors
• Hot Glue

To start, cut a bunch of ribbon in 1 1/2 inch strips.  Start with about 20 then cut more if you need it.  If you are using a smaller egg maybe dont cut as many to begin with.

Once you have all your strips cut you can start pinning them to the egg.  To start pinning, you want to start at the bottom of the egg (the smallest end) and make 4 points to cover the styrafoam.  I did the 2 sides facing each other then the other 2 sides and that seems to work best for me, but do whatever works for you.  To get the ribbon the nice pointy look make a triangle fold on the ribbon length-wise.  Press the edges down and make a good crease.  Flip the triangle over and use 2 stick pins to hold the ribbon in place on the egg.  I used one pin in each corner but if you want to do just one in the center that works too.

Work your way around the egg, remember that they wont line up exactly, but make sure as you work your way up the egg that you cover up the top of the ribbon triangle as well as the pins.

It doesnt look pretty at first but as you plug along it starts looking like a fancy egg.  I was getting more and more excited as I worked my way up.  Ok so once you get to the top this is what you have (kinda) right?

Wow what a pretty egg you made!  But how do you cover the top?  Well take one more of your ribbon strips and fold it like so.  What I did was do the triangle fold on both sides of the ribbon to make this little box, that way all the edges are clean.

You dont have to make a nice box like this you can just use a regular stip of ribbon, but I liked the finished edge look better.  Now pin this to the top of the egg

Ok you have all your ribbon on, now you are ready for the finishing touch...FANCY RIBBON.  I have an unhealthy love of ribbon Im sorry I cant help myself :)  So cut a LOOOOONG stretch of ribbon and cut as many pieces of it as you want in all the lengths you want.  Make sure (if you want to turn this into an ornamanet for Christmas) that you leave on long enough to make a loop to hang and another long enough to make a pretty bow.  Once you have all your ribbon ready, start gluing it to the top.  Make sure its centered otherwise those of you that are OCD, it will drive you insane.  What I did was glue the strands of ribbon on first (although for the second egg I pinned them on), then I glued the loop, the I topped it with the bow, that way the glue as covered by the knot of the bow.  If you want to pin the ribbon on thats ok, but keep in mind that if you are planning on hanging these then the pins may not hold, thats where the hot glue comes in, but pins are just as good if you are just using them for decorations.

I know the picture looks a mess but doenst the final product look so pretty!

What I love about these, besides them being so darn pretty, is you can do different ribbon so they dont just have to be for Christmas ornaments, you can make them for Spring and Summer and even fall!  You are only limited by what ribbon you have (and of course the fact that it needs to be 1 1/2 inch, that makes it hard).  Have you made one of these babies?  I would love to see how yours turned out!

Quick Curtains

As you know from yesterday, I love my bathroom...finally.  I love the fresh green and white colors and the accents I added to the room.  One of those accents is the curtain.

Originally this window had blinds on them and I just dont think blinds belong in a bathroom.  So we frosted the window (frost film you can buy at lowes and slap on the window, takes 30minutes, seriously you should do this) and then I KNEW I needed to add a curtain or SOMETHING on this window, it was just so bare.  I found an article in "Decorating Shortcuts" (2011) on how to make this curtain and tried my hand at it.  So without further ado, here is how to make this lovely curtain.

Supplies:

• Fabric (I used outdoor fabric because its thick and heavy, but you can use whatever you love most)
• Fusible Hem tape ( I made the mistake of getting the ribbon hem tape not the kind that goes inbetween the seams, it works but is not as nice to look at)
• Ribbon
• Tension Rod
• Embelishments (you cant really see them but I have crystal tassles hanging from the ribbon)

Instructions:

1. Measure the inside of your window frame and add two inches to the width and three inches to the length.  I bought extra just in case I messed up a cut, but I always buy more fabric than I need, which is sometimes a good thing, I have used this fabric twice more from this curtain.
2. Cut fabric to your measurements
3. Fold each long side over 1/2 inch, then fold again another 1/2 inch (see why you need the extra inches, this makes for a much nicer hem in the back if you do it this way).  Press with an iron, insert hem tape in the fold and iron over again.
4. Follow the same method for the bottom side but on the top side fold over 1/2 inch then 1 1/2 inches to make the flap for the tension rod.  Insert hem tape and iron.
5. Insert the tension rod into the pcoket and hang.
6. Cut two equal pieces of ribbon, about 1 1/2 times the length of your window.
7. Accordian fold the bottom of the curtain to the desired length and tie the ribbons into a bow.  Note here, you will probably want help with this, I had a really hard time holding the curtain and tying the bow at the same time.  You may be more skillful than I, but holding the according fold just right and trying to tie a bow was frustrating the heck out of me.
8. If you have embelishments you can add them now, I always like to wait until the end and add them, you can do whatever order you like but I prefer the end.

Underneath the Miseltoe

You remember a while back I made some super easy Christmas Ornaments?  Well I had some left over christmas picks and decided to make my own "miseltoe".  I know it looks nothing like the real thing, but I thought it would be a nice decoration to add to all my others since I dont really have anything that serves as miseltoe in the house.

Super easy, just get your picks (I used 3) tape them all together and tie a bow around it!  So fast and easy and this ones is so fun I can put it just about anywhere!  Have fun making your super easy "miseltoe" and if you have some amazing pictures of one you have made share!!

Ribbon Ribbon Everywhere

Continuing with the "I made this in the past" theme.  I made this a few weeks ago because I got bit by the Christmas craft bug HARD and I needed to let my creativity flow.  I saw this in a holiday food magazine of all places.  It looked really cute and easy to make so I went for it!

What you'll need:

• foam cone (choose your size)
• at least 7 different types of ribbon (your choise of color combinations)
• straight pins (a pack of 100 should be plenty)

So these are really easy, what you need is a green foam cone, the kind you get from Hobby Lobby or Michael.  Get whatever size you want but mine was on the smaller side.  Depending on the size of your cone will depend on how much ribbon you will need, but for the 2 trees I used 1 spool of each ribbon color.  A tip on this, wired ribbon doesnt work as well, you can use it of course (especially if you find an awesome pattern) it just wont lay the same as you can kinda see here I used wire ribbon on the bottom layer.  So I have 7 layers and to be honest i eye-ball most of my measurements, but these are roughly 5 inches for each strand for each layer.  For you though, each layer you want to get progressively shorter, which I didnt do because honestly I forgot.  It will also help to have all the ribbon to be the same width, the fatter the ribbon the wider the space between loops and the easier it is to see the cone underneath, so the medium size is the best.  Stay away from the super skinny ribbon it doesnt do well at all and you have to use twice as much.  If you are dying to use it then go ahead, but dont say I didnt warn you :)

Now that you have all your supplies you are ready to start pinning.   I cut each level one at a time just to make sure everything worked out right.  So start at the bottom and work your way up.  Take the ribbon piece and fold in half, pin each corner of the ribbon into the cone and work your way around the bottom layer.  Then start on the next layer, keep going until you reach the top.  To have a more finished look I ran a ribbon around the top to hide all the pins and sealed in place with a hot glue gun.  Be careful to not burn your fingers!!  To add a little extra fancy I made a loop out of a ribbon of choice and hot glued to the top of the cone (this will also hide the remaining cone that is visable).  You can always top it with something a little more cute like a star or an angel, but we use what we have right!

I hope you dont pin the crap out of your fingers like I did mine, but I think that may be inevitable.  If you have some cool looking ribbon trees please share them here I would love to see what you created!
